Narrative mediation workshop

with Richard Cohen & Stella Levy
Melbourne, 4-5 March 2010

14 hours continuing professional development

Make the most of a rare opportunity to develop skills in Narrative mediation with Richard Cohen, one of Narrative mediation's founders.

The two day Narrative mediation workshop will incorporate narrative and transformative perspectives into a process which can heal as well as resolve.

"Narrative mediation assists parties to get beyond negative and destructive patterns of interaction," says Richard. "It develops empathy, deeper understandings, reflection and strength."

Narrative mediation attends to the personal, relational and cultural context within which conflict arises.

"The negotiator performs as a trusted guide and advisor inviting all parties to participate in the co-creation of insights and meaningful resolutions."

Co-facilitator Stella Levy will introduce a restorative mediation component to the training. Restorative justice principles along with mindfulness training are a natural fit with narrative mediation.

By separating the person from the problem (a key aspect of narrative), it is easier for parties to take responsibility for their actions as required by restorative justice. By using non-judgmental awareness (mindfulness), mediators can help parties to become more accountable for their actions without feeling punished or demonised.

The workshop

Highly practical, the workshop focuses on skills development and will include:

  • Key narrative theoretical concepts and terms,
  • Exercises and discussion for applying these concepts, and
  • Simulated mediations using a narrative approach.

Role plays and scenarios will be matched to the participants' backgrounds: workplace, family and/or community. The workshop will also include a restorative mediation component.

The workshop will contribute 14 hours to your continuing professional development required for accreditation to the National Standards.
