Mediator self-care –
mediating your inner dialogue

with Ike Lasater

Sydney, Monday 1 March 2010

Listen to a podcast of Ike's Introduction to Mediator self-care at the NSW Chapter meeting in February. Click here >>

Caring for ourselves is vital to support our continued work in the area of conflict.

Working with people in conflict stimulates reactions to the subject matter, the people involved and conflict in general.

We often hear a critical voice in our head that judges us against an impossible standard of perfection. Learning from these dialogues can enable us to do better work as mediators, conflict coaches and other ADR practitioners.

Skill of self-empathy

In this workshop, you will learn the skill of self-empathy (as based on the principles of Non-violent Communication) which can be applied to care for ourselves before, during and after mediation, facilitation or coaching sessions.

Non-violent communication (NVC) is a simple and powerful communication model developed by Marshall B Rosenberg comprising four basic components: observation, feeling, needs and request.
(For more information see: www.CNVC.org)

Ike Lasater brings his rich experience as a mediator, facilitator, lawyer and trainer to help us learn the challenging business of mediating our self.

Previous participants from Ike's training in Australia last year said:

“Ike's warmth, generosity and authenticity permeate his training offerings. He creates a safe space within which participants can practice consciousness and empathy.”

“This was a very valuable course - personally and professionally.”

"Practitioners would never think of saying 'shut up' to a client (in mediation) but we do that to ourselves. If we're to be valid as practitioners, we need to use our own natural care and compassion with ourselves."
