Agenda setting: mediation skills development

"...mediations seem to last longer and get more bogged down when there is no agenda or no effective use of an agenda."

"A survey conducted of participants prior to an advanced mediation course revealed that agenda setting was the most problematic area for these reasonably experienced practitioners."

"For the uninitiated or discouraged, we would encourage persistance with mastering this most useful technique."

- Charlton R and Dewdney M
The Mediator's Handbook 2004, pg 46

LEADR Advanced mediator, Val Sinclair will lead a stimulating session exploring the skills and challenges associated with setting an agenda. The session will be highly interactive – attendees will help to identify the issues and fashion them into an agenda that is in plain language, neutral and mutual.

The session will also explore:

  • The ways in which an agenda contributes to a mediation
  • Handy hints when it’s hard to identify the issues
  • Useful tips to frame the agenda topics in neutral and mutual terms
  • How to prioritise the topics
  • Using the whiteboard effectively.

Come along to observe, ask questions, share your insights or even to volunteer to be “mediator” for a short time in a role play.
