The NSW Society for Computers and the Law invites you to hear Erik Wilbers, the Director of the World Intellectual Property Organization's Mediation and Arbitration Center, speaking about the work of WIPO on Tuesday 4 December.

He will focus on the Center's role including domain name dispute resolution, intellectual property and technology dispute resolution and general commercial arbitration and mediation.

WIPO is an international provider of non-profit services for the out-of-court resolution of commercial disputes in particular those arising out of technology and intellectual property transactions.

The convenor is Philip Argy, Partner, Mallesons Stephen Jacques; member, WIPO Neutrals panel, WIPO; LEADR domain name dispute resolution panelist; mediator and arbitrator; and President, Australian Computer Society.

 

About Erik Wilbers

Born in The Netherlands, Erik Wilbers is the Acting Director and the Head of the domain name dispute resolution section of the Arbitration and Mediation Center of WIPO in Geneva.

Following studies in the US and The Netherlands, Erik was a research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property Law in Munich. Before joining WIPO in 1996, he practiced with the law firm of Clifford Chance in Amsterdam, was on the legal staff of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal in The Hague, and headed a division of the Compensation Commission of the United Nations Security Council.

At the WIPO Center, Erik oversees the Center's provision of resources to IP stakeholder to help them achieve time and cost effectiveness in dispute resolution.

Areas of work also include the management of Internet domain name cases filed with the WIPO Center. He is involved in the development of on-line case systems and other methods aimed at increasing the efficiency of dispute resolution and has written and spoken on a variety of legal subjects including arbitration and IP.
