The Commissioner for Equal Opportunity must use all reasonable endeavours to conciliate complaints. In 2007/2008, The Equal Opportunity Commission conciliated 52% of complaints that were taken up by the Commissioner. Get an inside view on the processes, facts and figures and the approach to conciliation used at the Equal Opportunity Commission as well as hearing about practical approaches that work and those that don’t from the view of a conciliator.
About Kate Millar
With qualifications in social work and law, Kate has worked in a variety of areas including the acute psychiatric ward of the Royal Hobart Hospital where she assisted in the aftermath of the shootings at the Port Arthur. Kate implemented the Mental Health Act in Tasmania writing the guidelines for applying the new legislation, before moving to Victoria and working in mental health policy and as an in-house lawyer at the Department of Human Services. She is currently the Manager, Complaint Handling Services at the Equal Opportunity Commission and is on the Housing Appeals Panel and the Social Security Appeals Tribunal.
