Personality and mediation – Ways different people process and use the same information

with Clare Swetenham

on Tuesday 9 February

Differences in perception and judgment are the source of much conflict. If disputants in mediation, or even the mediator, do not understand these differences and assume everyone processes information and makes decisions in the same way, an impasse may be reached – regardless of the substance of the dispute.

Based on the materials developed by Heidi Smith for mediator style training, Clare suggests that psychological type and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator can be used as a spotlight to help us see and understand more clearly what is really involved in a conflict situation. By incorporating awareness of how people of different personality types tend to behave in conflict, we can better strategise how to approach, communicate and resolve conflict situations.
