Navigating workplace disputes:
mediating in the shark-infested waters of organisations

Podcast: Listen to David talk about this session ( 7 mins) >>

Many dispute interveners can unwittingly become dispute creators in the workplace. Often this is due to uncritically accepting the framing of the dispute by the client, be they HR representatives or legal advisers, or a simplistic view of the effectiveness of mediation in a context where power is at work.

What is required is an anthropological approach to organisational conflict that recognises systemic power and the interaction of the structural elements of organisational life. The ADR practitioner requires a shrewd sense of establishing and navigating boundaries of practice. Almost invariably it will demand leadership by the mediator, a strategic approach to resolving underlying organisational issues, not just the presenting problem.

This workshop explores how a dispute resolution practitioner can successfully navigate through the chaos. It will also provide an opportunity for participants to share their own experience and apply what is discussed to their practice.

David is fortunate in having a wonderful network of ADR practitioners to talk with and support him while involved in workplace mediations; nothing is more valuable than that resource. He reads novels in his spare time and neglects gardening, is a musical dilettante, and enjoys a monthly book club. He bats at number 3 in a veteran cricket team and swims the black line to keep in shape. With his partner he keeps a watching brief on two great teenagers.

David Bryson

David studied African social anthropology at Oxford University and has completed post-graduate studies in organisational change consulting. He was formerly Assistant Commissioner of Equal Opportunity in Victoria and is a Conciliation Officer with the Accident Compensation Conciliation Service in Melbourne.

David is a nationally accredited mediator with LEADR, a conflict coach, and an accredited MBTI practitioner.  He has written widely on ADR practice and conducts training in conflict resolution, mediation and conciliation skills.

Since 2000 David has managed his own consulting business specialising in workplace dispute resolution. His key professional interest is facilitating underlying change in people and the organisations they inhabit.  This interest often takes him out of his depth!
