Does your personality affect your mediator style?

Powerpoint >>

About the session

According to the psychologist Carl Jung people differ in how they:

  • Are energised by the world (are we attracted to the outer world of people and things or the inner world of thoughts and feelings?)
  • Perceive information (do we focus on information from our senses or patterns and trends?)
  • Make decisions (do we make decisions based on an objective analysis of facts or on our values and feelings?)
  • Control their environment (are we decisive and controlling or are we spontaneous and flexible?)

These differences can affect the source of conflict, the way we express ourselves in conflict, our tolerance of other peoples’ point of view, and even the way we approach conflict resolution.

Did you know that in perceiving information, 80% of mediators prefer to focus on patterns and trends rather than straight data from our five senses?  Further more, mediators who have this preference and a preference for values and feelings rather than an objective analysis of facts, are more likely to demonstrate a broad exploration of issues in mediation. That is, they are more likely to look beyond the presenting legal or technical aspects of the dispute and explore underlying interests and values in fostering resolution.

Podcast: Listen to Heidi talk about her session (4 mins) >>

Heidi’s  business email is signed with the quote  “Of all the knowledge the wise and good seek most to know themselves” by William Shakespeare. Heidi’s personal email is signed with a quote be Deepak Shopra “My own life has been touched often by synchronicity, so much so that now I get on an airplane expecting the passenger in the next seat to be surprisingly important to me, either just the voice I need to hear to solve a problem or a missing link in a transaction that needs to come together....” Heidi hopes her email signatures provide her recipients with the message they need for their life to come together.
