Corporate values and signature behaviours in the Royal Australian Navy – do they have a role in conflict resolution?

Paper >>

Powerpoint >>

Corporate values are in vogue. Corporations and Government organisations world wide have mission statements linked to formal values that incorporate principles of ethical behaviour, honesty, teamwork, organisational and personal integrity. ‘Living our values’ has become the mantra that has demanded compliance from employees at all levels.

One example of this trend is the Australian Defence Force (ADF). The ADF has embraced the trend to drive behaviours and personal accountability to reflect compliance with ADF values through the Navy, Air Force and Army.

This commitment is aptly demonstrated by the Royal Australian Navy’s ‘New Generation Navy Signature Behaviours’ strategy released in 2009.

ideas cafe j unklesWill the use of ‘signature behaviours’ embracing principles including;

  • respecting the contribution of every individual and promoting the wellbeing and development of all Navy people and values of;
  • honour, integrity, courage, honesty and loyalty,

promote appropriate behaviour in the workforce and effective mediation outcomes for Defence personnel involved in work place disputes?

Are there lessons to be learnt in the Navy’s promotion and use of corporate values and ‘signature behaviours’ to mediators working in dispute resolution in civilian, Government organisations and commercial entities.
