About the session

Dispute resolution usually involves finding commonalities between parties. Finding commonalities allows parties to focus not only on personal interests, but also on interests of other parties. The paper will argue that a values approach to mediation will encourage parties to recognise and acknowledge the needs of other parties; focus on similarities rather than differences; and find commonalities based on which the dispute may be resolved.

A values approach to mediation involves four (steps): education; recognition; support; and resolution. These steps may be tailored to suit specific disputes, and what is required at each step will depend on the outcome of a dispute analysis engaged in by the practitioner.
