Working with emotions in mediation

Audio recording: Listen to this session (80 mins) >>

About this session

Working with the emotions can often be the “x factor” – the bit that gets to the real issue (and can free up stuckness.)

As mediators we need to have a comfortable relationship with emotions – both our own and those of the parties in the mediation process. We need to recognise when emotions are clouding the issue and when they are the issue. We need to know when the expression of emotions is hindering the mediation process and when its healing and therefore integral to the mediation process.

This session will address:

  1. Recognising indicators that emotions – both our own and those of the parties - are at play in the process and the impact of these on the process
  2. Embracing emotions as  part of the mediation process
  3. When and how do we facilitate the containing of emotions
  4. When and how do we facilitate the healthy expression of emotions
  5. How do we recognise and manage our own emotions both during and after the mediation process.

This session will focus on skills extension and will include both self reflection and skills development. Participants will have the opportunity to practice skills practice, gain feedback and raise issues from their experience.
