Nowra Family Relationship Centre has recently reflected upon, and through a series of staff interviews and focus groups, written up the practice of the Centre as it relates to working with families who have experienced, or are experiencing, domestic violence (DV). This process made explicit a whole range of assumptions and theories that undergird the work.
Across the sector, approaches to working in a family dispute resolution context with families experiencing DV range from “we just issue a Section 60i certificate and assess the case as inappropriate” through to extensive work which may or may not include joint dispute resolution.
Our purpose in formally articulating the work was to examine, consolidate and improve skills in relation to domestic violence and to provide material for debate and feedback on our service. We did this in order to enhance safety and to be effective in supporting victims through periods of increased risk of harm, during separation and negotiation of parenting agreements. Ultimately we did this to support vulnerable children’s wellbeing. This presentation will present what has worked, and where the ongoing challenges are in relation to this type of work.
Working with this client group is always going to be challenging; practitioners wishing to develop their practice appreciate hearing from others' real life experiences rather than just theoretical principles.
We would envisage spending approx 25 mins presenting the paper which will include DVD interviews of workers from other services and clients who have engaged with our service. A facilitated discussion time can then take place in small groups of 4-6 with some specific questions for the groups to respond to.
Copies of the Nowra Family Relationship Centre report (on which the presentation is based) will be made available to participants on conclusion of the presentation.
