The workshop will help participants identify the impacts of the National Standards and the opportunities they open for parties and mediators. Underpinning the National Standards is a focus on self determination and party decision making.
What is the effect of that radical change of focus on the mediator, on the parties, and on the mediation practice?
The objective of the workshop will be to examine the impact of the National Mediation Accreditation Standards (NMAS) on people and organisations in conflict and in particular on whether they allow or enable parties in dispute to achieve more than the mere ending or settlement of disputes, to explore what may be achievable beyond a settlement of disputes in terms of managing conflict.
Topics to be covered:
- Impact the National Mediator Standards have on traditional and current mediation practices
- What happens to people and organisations in conflict
- How achieving settlement does not ensure the resolution of conflict
- What lies beyond settlement and the opportunities mediation presents
The opportunities to take participants beyond resolving disputes and in supporting disputants to constructively change their conflict interactions, rebuild trust and transcend the conflict itself.
The workshop will provide a synthesis of current thinking and an opportunity for skills extension as well as providing opportunities for new understandings of the opportunities available under the National Practice Standards.
