Mediating with members of the GLBTIQ community:
being gay friendly is not enough!

Explore your awareness and understanding of the GLBTIQ community and develop your skills for working with members of this community.

samMediation is not one size fits all, as is clearly apparent when we consider the experiences of the GLBTIQ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer) community in mediation. It is an accepted fact that mediators need to have cross-cultural awareness, in order to provide a service suitable for those from different cultures. This awareness needs to include an understanding of 'queer culture', and the particular issues that face members of the non-heterosexual community in their daily lives.

Research has demonstrated that it is not homophobia, but homo-ignorance that is leading to a significant and negative impact on GLBTIQ mediation clients in Australia.

This workshop provides important information for mediators who are likely to work with members of the GLBTIQ community to enable them to provide a more respectful and appropriate service.

  • Participants will learn about a recent research project surveying mediators and GLBTIQ community members about their expectations, knowledge and experiences in mediation;
  • Participants will gain a greater understanding of the needs of the GLBTIQ community in mediation;
  • Participants will be better equipped to mediate conflict involving members of the GLBTIQ community.
