How does using an evidence-based approach support the sustainability of the mediated outcomes?

moiraWhile the suitability of mediation to address complaints of workplace bullying has been hotly debated, research indicates that the main approaches taken after complaints of workplace bullying are made are usually conciliatory rather than punitive (Saam, 2010, Salin, 2008, 2009).

While mediation is determined to be an appropriate intervention in most workplace bullying complaints, when used alone, focuses on the dyadic relationship between parties, and fails to address the systemic antecedents that have been identified by more than a decade of research as contributing to the development and maintenance of workplace bullying.

This presentation advocates an evidence based approach to mediating complaints of bullying in order to ensure that mediated outcomes are sustainable, and the recommended Occupational Health and Safety and Welfare (OHSW) approach to bullying is taken (Caponecchia & Wyatt, 2011). If an integrated approach such as this is not taken, mediated agreements may not be sustainable, and an escalation of conflicts could pose a potential risk of further bullying and threat to the health and safety of vulnerable employees.
