Explore ideas around choice and the impact 'having choice' can have on parties' ability to make decisions in mediation.

annacarolAn interactive workshop exploring the concept of choice and the impact choice has on the parties ability to make decisions in mediation.

Participants will:

  • identify common assumptions that exist about choice (e.g. the more choices the better)
  • consider how we make decisions
  • look at some cultural influences on the concept of choice
  • develop ways to alter the structure of their process to meet the challenges identified.

The session will include a mixture of the presentation of concepts, small group discussion and exercises, and large group discussion.

Carol Powell (left)

Carol works as a professional mediator, facilitator and trainer. She designs and presents workshops in managing conflict and communication for LEADR and a number of private clients including, in recent times, the Ministry of Justice, the Department of Building & Housing, YWCA and the University of Auckland.

Carol has been mediating for over 15 years and has mediated a wide range of disputes.  She sits on a number of panels including Weathertight Homes Resolution Service, Health & Disability Commissioner, Domain Name Commissioner and Family Court – Lawyer to Assist with Mediation Panel.

Carol is a specialist in conflict management including dispute system design; drafting dispute resolution clauses; advising clients on appropriate methods of dispute resolution. Carol is actively involved in LEADR and has sat on the Board of LEADR NZ for more than 10 years (including four as Chair).  She also sits on the board of LEADR and is the New Zealand representative on the LEADR Accreditation Committee. Carol has recently accepted an appointment to the International Standards Committee of IMI (International Institute of Mediators).

Anna Quinn (right)

Anna is a leading trainer in dispute resolution in New Zealand and Vice Chair of the LEADR NZ Board. She has trained at or designed hundreds of workshops on dispute resolution on topics including communication, negotiation, facilitation, mediation and restorative justice.

In addition to lecturing in dispute resolution at Auckland University Law School for several years, Anna regularly mentors mediators and is a member of the LEADR NZ accreditation panel.  She has set up and implemented re-certification/supervision programmes in NZ for the WHRS and NY (for a Community Mediation Programme). 

Anna also has extensive experience mediating claims involving community to commercial issues.
