What the National Mediation Standards mean for LEADR Accredited members

Training and education requirements for national accreditation as a mediator under the new Australian National Mediation system are outlined in the Approval Standards >>

The Standards provide for recognition of ‘experience qualified’ mediators. An experience qualified mediator must have worked as a mediator prior to 1 January 2008 and have experience, training, and education that satisfies LEADR that they are equipped with the skills, knowledge and understandings set out in the core competencies (in the Practice Standards >>).

Micronesia and Samoa enthusiastic about mediation

LEADR has just completed two mediation workshops in the Pacific – in Samoa and Micronesia – which were received with tremendous enthusiasm. As mediation is closer in nature to customary law than the introduced adversarial system, participants took to it like ducks to water. Invited by the Federal Court of Australia to deliver this training as part of the Pacific Judicial Development Program (PJDP), LEADR adapted its delivery of the standard mediation workshop to meet the participants' specific needs. Research into mediator's competencies in intercultural workplace conflicts

Visiting Finnish PhD student, Janne Laukkala is exploring workplace mediators' competencies in intercultural conflicts ie disputes in which national or organisational cultural differences play a role and so must be taken into consideration in the mediation. The competencies are divided into general conflict management and intercultural competencies.

Based at The University of Adelaide, Janne aims to create an understanding of how mediator's competencies are seen by different stakeholders. He is seeking to interview workplace mediators with different levels of experience in intercultural mediation: in-house mediators, HR managers and potentially disputants. Interviews by phone will take between one to one and a half hours and be conducted in January and February. If you are interested, please email him on janne.laukkala@adelaide.edu.au

If you know any in-house mediators in Australia, please pass on this request, or contact Janne. The outcome of the research, due for comletion by the end of 2009, has the potential to assist in mediation training.
